Does your dog see cardboard boxes and get excited about playing the K9 Nose Work game? Is he hunting for his reinforcer reliably in multiple locations? Can he find his reinforcer hiding in other locations besides the boxes? If you are saying "Yes!" then your dog could be ready to be introduced to his first target odor.

The Intro to Odor workshop is designed for future and current K9 Nose Work instructors, dog sports enthusiasts, and pet owners who are already having fun training dogs in the basics of K9 Nose Work and want to take the next step. Amy and Jill will take you through the process of transferring the dog from hunting for his primary reinforcer (food or toy) to a target odor through discussion, and working with the dogs.

The workshop will include:

  • How to evaluate if the dog is ready for odor

  • Explanation of introducing odor

  • Elements of expanding the search

  • Introducing the target odor to the dogs at the workshop

  • Explanation of the Odor Recognition Test (ORT)?

These topics may be subject to some adjustment based on the levels of the dogs in attendance.

The Intro to Odor workshop is 4 hours long. You are welcome to attend one session or come for the whole day.

Continuing Education Credits: CCPDT: 2 CEUs per 1/2 day workshop. 4 CEUs for a full day(2 workshops). IAABC CEUs are pending. We do expect some.

Prerequisite for Attendance:

Intro to Odor workshop is only open to people who have attended an Intro to K9 Nose Work workshop given by Jill- Marie O'Brien, Amy Herot or Ron Gaunt. Or has completed at least a 6 week class by a Certified Nose Work Instructor(CNWI).

Ways to Participate:

Auditor (Limit: 40 - 50) Auditing is a great way to take home the skills to work independently or bring the program back to your students.

Working Participant with your Dog (Limits:12 - 16 dogs for half day workshops depending on the location)

Canine Prerequisite:

Your dog sees a line of boxes, and knows the nose game is on!

Your dog has experienced and can search in 5 different locations of varying environment types (i.e. living room other then the dog's, garage at a friend's house, park like area, office, etc.)

Your dog will search many objects, not just boxes to find his reward

Your dog has built stamina to do several searches and maintain focus and energy

You know what really motivates your dog and overrides other interests (in people, dogs, environments)

You've practiced consistently since the last workshop and built on the skills to keep your dog successful.

The instructors have the right to decline working with a dog if the dog is not ready to be introduced to odor at the workshop; does not meet the benchmarks above; or it is detrimental to do so in the opinion of the instructors. Tuition will not be refunded if this happens. If in doubt, it is best to audit the workshop and teach your dog at home when he is ready.

Shy, over-exuberant, and certain mild to moderately reactive dogs are welcome candidates but must be tolerant of the instructors coaching the team, many people watching in the audience, and dogs in the area. Leave dogs at home that have a bite history with people, pose a threat to others dogs or people, are intolerant of strangers in the general area, have serious aggression, or exhibit strong fearful responses. We reserve the right to decline working with a dog and/or asking a dog to leave the workshop without refund if we feel she/he is inappropriate or dangerous to the staff or seminar participants, or if the experience is detrimental to the dog’s emotional well-being. Handlers are required to disclose full information as it pertains to any level of aggression and will sign a release. Dogs are worked one at a time while other dogs are resting in her/his crate until her/his turn. Dogs must be able to stay quietly in a crate out of owner’s sight or in a properly equipped vehicle when not working.

Females in season will be allowed in some of the locations under the following circumstances. The dog will not enter the training area until her turn and will be the last dog worked. She must wear “pants” when in the building. She must stay in a properly equipped vehicle in the back of the parking area until her turn and be walked away from the front of the training facility and from the other dogs. Dogs of Course must be notified ahead of time.

Flanders, NJ - Yes
Columbia, MD - No

In locations that do not allow females in season, the working participant has the option to bring another dog or switch to an auditor position and will be reimbursed per the transfer to auditor refund policy. If the owner chooses not to bring another dog or switch to auditor status she/he is subject to the standard cancellation policies. If you have ANY questions please contact Dana before you register.
