What is K9 Nose Work®?
K9 Nose Work®  is a dog training activity designed to develop a dog’s natural scenting ability by using her/his curiosity, desire to hunt, and love of toys, food and exercise. The art and practice of nose work is open to dogs of all shapes and sizes and has made basic search dog skills available to companion dogs, creating a new sport arena for dog enthusiasts. Not only has it proven to be a great activity for all types of dogs, but the founders' techniques make this one of the most accessible activities for the widest variety of dog handlers regardless of previous training experience.

About Camp:
Dogs of Course, in association with the National Association of Canine Scent Work™ (NACSW) have created this three and a half day NACSW approved Training Camp. K9 Nose Work® Training Camp is designed to enhance the understanding of K9 Nose Work®, to develop the skills necessary to compete in the sport of K9 Nose Work®, and to provide a model for effective instruction for current and future nose work instructors.

This all-inclusive sleepover camp is
open to all appropriate dog and handler teams as well as auditors. We will concentrate on the elements necessary to succeed at the sport and the application of K9 Nose Work® for recreation and increasing a dog’s confidence regardless of interest in competition. The curriculum for camp will cover starting dogs, introducing odor, introducing exteriors and vehicle searches, improving skills for dogs already working the four required elements, handler skills, leash handling techniques, understanding how to read the dogs, competition rules, trouble shooting and a variety of other necessary skills, PLUS loads of fun and camaraderie.

We are happy to take dogs at different levels of nose work training from beginners getting their first exposure to dogs ready to compete or competing. Each dog and handler team will be grouped with other similar level participants to maximize learning and progress during camp. There will be a certain number of assigned working spots for each skill level. Dogs on odor will be working on Birch. Only one working dog per working participant. Approximately 8 campers per group.

Campers will be learning from the three founders of the sport along with Certified Nose Work Instructors (CNWI). Our camp instructing staff are competent skilled teachers that are also actively involved in many areas of K9 Nose Work®   - training, competition, judging, and instruction.

Beginners:
Dog/handler teams and auditors without nose work experience are encouraged to come to camp to learn about the activity. We welcome instructors, sports enthusiasts, hobby trainers, and shelter workers to attend camp as your introduction to K9 Nose Work®. Our beginner dog/handler teams will learn the foundations through hands-on training and lecture as well as be exposed to more advanced skills. We feel this is a perfect way to jump start your education in K9 Nose Work
® so you can train your own dog, start classes, or incorporate it into a shelter program. Please note that we do not have a training level for dogs started in NW but not on odor yet. This beginner group is for dogs that are not already in classes or practicing regularly.

Experienced K9 Nose Work® Trainers:
The majority of our camp caters to dog/handler teams that are already on birch odor and experienced trainers that would like to audit. Our instructors will cater to dogs new to working on odor up through dogs ready to compete or currently competing in K9 Nose Work® trials.  We welcome repeat campers back to continue their education as well as new campers that have been taking classes with instructors versed in the K9 Nose Work® methodology. Dogs MUST have at least 12 weeks of class (or organized practices) and be on birch odor for at least 6 weeks. Foundation skills need to include a minimum of 6 weeks on searching for the primary reward in a variety of locations both in and out of boxes. Then the dog needs to have completed at least 6 additional weeks of training in searching for odor. This could involve pairing odor with food. Dogs should be able to independently search for birch without requiring pairing to locate the source of the odor.

Instructors:
Camp is a great way for future K9 Nose Work® instructors to learn about the activity. Whether you want to start classes for fun, competition, shelter dog enrichment, or as part of a behavior modification protocol, participating as an auditor or with your own dog will provide a solid foundation you can take home and apply. Learn from some of the world’s most skilled and experienced instructors, including the founders of the sport.

If you are currently teaching K9 Nose Work® classes, camp provides an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and skills, learn the newest techniques, and understand the thinking behind the training. Camp gives you time to fine tune your skills, so you can go back to your students with the most current knowledge.

For instructors that would like to be certified with the NACSW™, camp will help you reach that goal as we run the two required foundation seminars at camp - Intro to Nose Work and Intro to Odor. You will also learn about how all four elements are trained which is necessary for certification. Participation in camp will not meet all the requirements but will give you a great start.

Certified Nose Work Instructors will be given continuing education credit that is necessary for keeping your status current. We also have an additional skill building workshop the day after camp ends. See below.

Camp Coleman is centrally located to accommodate campers from the southern states. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia 1.5 hours north of Atlanta, Camp Coleman is just a half day's drive from Greensboro, NC; Columbia, SC; Nashville, TN; and Montgomery, AL. Memphis, TN and Orlando, FL are only a day away. Situated around Lake Shalom, this sprawling camp is a perfect setting for nose work fun. Camp Coleman has buildings for inside training as well as covered work areas and an abundance of outside space for exterior and vehicle search education. Campers and staff eat together in the dining hall and stay on the property.

IMPORTANT PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Camp Coleman is set on approximately 180 acres and is a walking facility. All campers cars will be parked in a perimeter lot or along the main entrance road away from the cabins. This includes commuter campers. The terrain is relatively flat for a camp in the mountains but includes daily hill climbing, uneven dirt roads, grass and requires lots of walking to get from place to place. We will have a team of camp helpers that will pick-up and deliver crates/bulky training equipment to a central location near your group's training station each morning to assist you. Once your crates are delivered to the general location, you will be required to move your crate to the specific areas throughout the day and then back to the drop off location. This can include up and down stairs, up or down a short hill, and up to approximately 200 feet. Remember that your dog and gear will probably be with you when you need to move your crate. Campers often work together to assist each other and our helpers will assist when possible. Campers need to be in good physical condition and able to walk with their dog and their training gear from the cabins to the working locations as well as up to a ten minute walk each way to and from the dining room. The lower camp path around the lake is about 1 mile and it takes approximately 20 - 30 minutes to walk a full circuit around camp. Check out the map of the camp to see the layout.

Food:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served in the dining hall at designated times starting with lunch on arrival day and ending with breakfast on move out day. The menu will consist of simple but healthy, filling food for omnivores as well as vegetarians. The camp cooking staff is lead by Nellie who earned rave reviews in 2011. We look forward to her delicious food including her home made southern fried chicken, salad bar, and hot cookies! We are sorry but we cannot promise to cater to specific dietary restrictions and suggest campers that have special needs supplement the meals as needed.

Lodging:
Each camper requests the lodging that best meets her/his needs on a first come basis. Most campers will enjoy the full summer camp experience and bunk in a multiple occupancy cabin with shared bathroom facilities. Cabins are not heated and only have screen doors and windows. However 1- 2 space heaters will be placed in each room and heavy plastic over the windows and door to help retain heat on chilly nights. Campers should plan to bring sleeping bags or heavy blankets. Electric blankets for the beds are welcome.


There will be two to four people in a cabin bunk room. Campers may request roommates. If two or more campers want to be guaranteed a bunkroom all to themselves, the pricing is considered "standard rate plus occupancy". Number, size, and special needs of dogs, or camper requirements, may dictate the lodging accommodations options available. Owners of reactive dogs or socially awkward dogs may find it best to room with friends that understand and can accommodate the dog's spatial requirements. For those campers with dog reactive dogs that are coming on their own, we will do our best to match you with another camper that has a dog with similar social needs or an auditor. It will be up to each camper to work with her/his bunkmate to create a safe and equal living environment. This may require that dogs will have limited time loose in the bunkroom and must sleep in their crates or an ex-pen at night. Campers with "friendly" dogs should expect that this may be required for your dog as well.


We have a very limited number of single heated rooms in the Health Center and Staff Cabin.
Most of these rooms have a single bed and set of bunk beds and would be appropriate for one person, a couple or two friends that don't mind tight quarters and are only traveling with one moderately sized dog each. Crates that stack could also be an advantage in these rooms. Most are smaller rooms so are not appropriate for people with multiple large dogs or lots of gear. A few of the rooms have their own bathrooms and the rest share a bathroom in the common hallway. Dogs must be able to tolerate other dogs and people in the common hallways or directly outside their door. The Health Center building and surrounding area will also be used for training classes during the day so are for friendly dogs only. The Staff Cabin is in a quiet area of camp and is designated for reactive dogs.

Auditor accommodations are in the cabins or in the premium double rooms if the other occupant is a working camper. The single rooms available are reserved for working campers.

Campers that prefer more comfortable accommodations are welcome to commute to camp each day or bring a self-contained trailer or RV. See RV policy below. The tuition for commuting or RV or trailer campers and day campers is the same as multiple occupancy camp.

Campers are expected to bring their own linens. A linen service is available for an additional fee of $25 for those that are flying or using public transportation to camp and are unable to bring their own. Linen will include: towels, a set of sheets with pillowcases and blankets. Beds in the cabins are twin bunk beds and in the single rooms are regular twins or twin bunk beds.

A limited number of RVs and trailers are welcome, however they must be self-contained. The camp does not have water or electrical hook-ups or a dump station. Please do not expect electricity.

The RV sites are in busy areas or the parking lots so plan that dogs and people will be walking by and classes could be run in the general area. For safety reasons no outside ex-pens or tie outs are allowed. Dogs must be walked on leash. We will assign a location for each RV ahead of time.

RV's must arrive between 10:00 - 11:30am on Thursday so we have the staffing to get the vehicle settled. No late arrivals. No exceptions.

Additional non-working dog fees also apply to people staying in RV's and trailers. Two dogs per registered working camper.

Camp is open to all adults interested in K9 Nose Work that are at least 18 years old.

All campers must be in good physical condition and able to walk to all activities as cars will be parked at the edge of camp in the parking area. This is a sprawling facility designed around a long lake. There are some hills including a short but very steep hill to the dining room.

Campers must be willing to clean up and sweep their room/cabin before going home leaving it in a neat and tidy condition.

Campers must clean up after his/her dog(s) and deposit feces in garbage receptacles.

Campers will need two crates for their working dog. One for the room and a second one to bring to the work stations. We suggest your working crate to be light weight and easy to carry. A small dolly or a crate cart that can roll on bumpy dirt roads could be very helpful.

Camp Coleman has agreed to be a restricted smoking facility for our group. All smoking must be done in designated open areas and never inside a building, structure, or in a wooded area. Violation of these rules is grounds for dismissal without refund.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited when working dogs or attending classes.



When more than one person attends from a family with one dog, one person is designated the handler and does all the training. The other person is an auditor. Family members cannot take turns working the dog.

Auditors: Campers who register as auditors are allowed to attend all sessions and move from group to group as long as she/he does not create a distraction or disturbance. Auditors are allowed to watch but will not participant in the training or other dog related activities. During working sessions we ask that auditors hold questions as it takes away from and interferes with the working campers time. Auditors can ask questions during lecture times. Auditors must leave their dog(s) home. Anyone that stays on camp property and is not working a dog is considered an auditor. Auditor accommodations are in the cabins or in the double rooms if the other occupant is a working camper. Please contact Dana if you have questions.

Commuters: Campers that prefer to commute from home or an area hotel are welcome at camp. The cost for commuters is the same as campers staying in multiple occupancy cabins and includes all meals and all activities. Commuters are responsible for locating and making their own sleeping arrangements. Please contact the Helen Welcome Center for local accommodations 706-878-2181. The nature of K9 Nose Work™  is to be open to as many dogs as can be safely and comfortably accommodated. This includes dogs with varying social skills, spatial requirements or that may be considered mild to moderately reactive. However, the camp environment is very different than standard classes and workshops. It can be additionally stressful for dogs to navigate so we ask that campers use their best judgment for the health and safety of her/his dog as well as the other campers.

Dogs with moderate to severe separation stress are not generally good candidates for camp. Dogs must be crated away from the owners during meals, lectures and in working sessions in unfamiliar environments. For most dogs with separation issues, camp compounds the problems seen at home or in classes. Again, please use your best judgment when considering your dog's ability to have a positive experience at camp as well as your impact on fellow campers and their dogs.

Please read the parameters for canine participation prior to making the decision to register for a working spot or as an auditor. If you have further questions please contact Dana to discuss your situation.



Canine Rules of Engagement:

  • All dogs must be able to be physically controlled by their registered handler.

 

  • All dogs must be kept on a six foot leash unless in designated areas or working directly in a session with camp staff personnel (no moving dogs from one area to another on flexi-leads or long lines)

 

  • Dogs must remain ON-LEASH at all times… NO EXCEPTIONS. (except where noted)

 

  • No dog/dog play or interaction will be permitted unless between two dogs residing in the same household

 

  • There will be a designated long line or flexi-lead exercise areas for playing ball or swimming your dog. There will not be an off lead at camp.

 

  • We ask that, regardless of how friendly your dog may be, you respect that not every dog is comfortable with other dogs approaching and may communicate their displeasure. So please do not allow your dog to approach dogs without permission. Managing your dog is your direct responsibility. Participants that must be repeatedly reminded of camp rules about not allowing their dog to approach other dogs; or if their dog poses other safety concerns may be dismissed from camp without refund.

 

  • If you work a dog that does not do well in close proximity to other dogs or humans, you will need to evaluate carefully the appropriateness of camp for your dog. We will make every effort to create an environment that can accommodate the varying types of dogs. However the number of dogs at camp, combined with increased training time and on-site lodging may be more than some can handle. Dogs that seriously threaten other dogs or humans, or are considered to be a danger at camp will be asked to leave if we can not work out a safe solution for all. Dogs with a bite history are not candidates for camp. No refunds will be offered if a dog is excused from participating in camp or asked to leave the camp grounds.

 

  • Dogs that need space or react to dogs or people approaching must wear a red bandana or bandana provided by the camp to help communicate the dog's needs.

 

  • Each working participant will be permitted to bring their registered working dog, plus one additional non-working dog at no additional fee. Additional non-working dogs will be permitted based on available space and there will be an additional fee. No swapping of dogs during camp classes and the additional dog may not pose any safety, handling or other concerns during camp. Campers that want to work two dogs are camp should contact Dana at Dogs of Course for more details.

 

  • Non-working dogs must stay in the lodging accommodations while the handler is in class with the working dog.

 

  • Dogs are worked one at a time while the other dogs are resting in crates in the training area until her/his turn. Dogs must be able to stay quietly in a crate out of owner’s sight when not working.

 

  • Dogs must be crated when left alone in the cabins/rooms. Owners are responsible for any damage the dog does to the facility.

 

  • Females in season are not allowed on the property. See refund policy for details.

 

  • Dogs must be healthy and free of contagious conditions including fleas. Dogs found with a contagious illness that may affect the rest of the dog population may be asked to leave without refund.

 

  • Campers must be willing to negotiate with his/her cabin-mates so there are fair and peaceful living conditions for all involved. Please expect that your dog will need to be crated at least part of the time when in the cabin.

     

We all want to have a pleasant experience; the success of this event will rely on everyone being diligent in complying with all the canine rules of engagement.

Video and Audio Taping Policy

No video or audio taping of lectures or classes permitted. At the discretion of the instructor and facility, videotaping of your own dog may be allowed during runs but may not be posted on a public website such as You Tube, facebook, etc.. without permission. There may be some videotaping done by the staff or instructors for educational or promotional purposes if participants at the workshop have signed a photo/video release.

Skill Building Workshop of Instructors

Updated 1/22/2012 - We added a new level!

On t
he day after camp ends, April 30,2012, there will be two levels of skill building workshops for campers. The first section is for Certified Nose Work Instructors or those currently enrolled in the NACSW Instructor program with the status of ANWI. ANWI status is usually granted after day 5 is completed. The second section/level is for campers who are teaching nose work classes or would like to teach but are not currently enrolled in the NACSW Certification Program or are enrolled but have not achieved the status of ANWI/CNWI.  The new level will run concurrently to the Skill Building Workshop for ANWI and CNWI. The purpose of this new level is to help nose work instructors confidently apply the information and training skills learned at camp to the classroom.

These workshops could include lecture, video and probably some demonstrations taught by one or more of the founders.
It is not expected to be a "working" day. Dogs that have participated at camp will get to relax in the participants cabin. This day is intended to provide continuing education for K9 Nose Work® instructors and helps fulfill continuing education credit requirements or to give new instructors more information. The Skill Building Workshop does not replace the required curriculum toward certification but will offer the instructor additional insights and knowledge important to mastering K9 Nose Work® instruction.

Fee: $200, Tuition includes three meals and overnight lodging at Camp Coleman on 4/30/2012. Breakfast is served the following morning before campers leave.

Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm

Registration for this workshop is separate from camp. This workshops must meet a minimum attendance level to run and may be limited depending on popularity.

Waitlist: When certain types of accommodations fill we will start an accommodations waitlist. If your first choice is full, you can register by selecting your second choice in housing with a note that you would like to upgrade if possible. Do not fill out a registration form unless you are willing to stay in housing that is available if you can't get in to your first choice.

A $200 non-refundable deposit or full payment is required at the time of registration. Full payment is due no later than 60 days prior to the start of camp.

Payment Options: You may pay via PayPal or check. Your registration will not be considered complete until we receive payment. Registration is pending for check payment until received and processed.

Working spots are limited to a maximum of approximately 72 participants.

Auditing is available. The number of auditor spots available is related to the overall number of participants.

All persons attending camp as non-working participants will be required to register as an auditor. Due to the nature of this event no exceptions will be permitted for this camp.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

All cancellations must be sent to Dogs of Course and received in writing. An acknowledgement of your cancellation will be emailed to you within 3 business days from Dogs of Course. Please keep a copy of the cancellation email for your records; your cancellation is not valid without this confirmation of receipt. K9 Nose Work™ Training Camp and Dogs of Course are not responsible for cancellations that do not reach the office by the deadlines.


 

  • Cancellations received on or before February 26, 2012 will be refunded less the $200 non-refundable deposit or registration may transfer to another qualified person for a $25 processing fee. The participant is responsible for finding a qualified replacement at the same level as the canceling camper's dog and working out reimbursement arrangements with that person. An e-mail or faxed letter transferring registration to the new person must be sent from the original participant along with the $25 transfer fee to Dogs of Course during the specified timeframe. Registration is not transferred until payment and documentation have been received and acknowledged. The camp director or staff has the option to refuse a replacement registrant if he/she does not qualify to be a camper or the dog does not fit in the same assigned group and we can not place the dog in another group due to space limitations. In the case that the replacement person does not qualify then the original camper who registered is responsible for finding another person or must take the refund available. The transfer camper must be registered and approved within 14 days of the original camper's cancellation.
  •  
  • Cancellations after February 26, 2012 and on or before March 15, 2012 will be refunded 50% of the tuition after the $200 non-refundable deposit is deducted or registration may transfer to another qualified person for a $25 processing fee. The participant is responsible for finding a qualified replacement at the same level as the canceling camper's dog and working out reimbursement arrangements with that person. An e-mail or faxed letter transferring registration to the new person must be sent from the original participant along with the $25 transfer fee to Dogs of Course during the specified timeframe. Registration is not transferred until payment and documentation have been received and acknowledged. The camp director or staff has the option to refuse a replacement registrant if he/she does not qualify to be a camper or the dog does not fit in the same assigned group and we can not place the dog in another group due to space limitations. In the case that the replacement person does not qualify then the original camper who registered is responsible for finding another person or must take the refund available. The transfer camper must be registered and approved within 14 days of the original camper's cancellation.

  • Due to the nature of running a dog training camp cancellations received after March 15, 2012 will not receive a refund. Registration can not be transferred to another person after March 22, 2012. See above transfer policy.
  • In 2012, there are two distinct separate groups at camp as it relates to registration, beginners and dogs on odor. The camper signs up for one group or the other and cannot freely move from one registration group to another due to planning of groups and levels. If a camper finds that he/she has registered for the wrong group or wants to move up then she/he must notify Dogs of Course in writing to request a move. Dogs of Course will try to accommodate the camper if space and time allows under the refund policies outlined. Registration cannot be changed after March 22, 2012. If the camper cannot be accommodated due to group limits or proximity to the start of camp then the camper will either remain in his/her group if she qualifies or cancel.

  • We do not allow female dogs in season on the property. If a registered working dog comes in season the camper has the option to: 1) bring a different qualified dog 2) switch to auditor registration and receive a refund for 50% of the difference between the two registration fees 3) the camper can cancel and be reimbursed per the general policy. If a non-working dog comes into season the person must leave the dog home and be reimbursed the additional dog fee (if applicable) minus a $25 admin fee or if the camper cancels the general refund policy above will apply.

  • Campers that have to leave early for their own reasons or are "No-shows” will not receive a refund.
  •  
  • Participants asked to leave the event/property by the camp director or lead instructors will not be refunded any part of the tuition.
  •  
  • No part of the tuition fee will be refunded if the camp cannot take place or be completed by reason of fire, civil disturbances, an Act of God, public emergency, or any other cause beyond the control of the camp organizers.

This policy applies to participants that must withdraw for ANY reason, including but not limited to injury, illness, emergency, and personal or work-related reasons.

Take LEFT onto Route 129 North in the center of Cleveland go approximately 7 miles, slow down when you approach mile marker 14. Immediately after passing mile marker 14, turn left into the camp entrance.

From Atlanta, GA (Drive time: 1 1/2 hours)
Take Interstate 75/85 North from Atlanta Airport (or points South). When you see signs for I-85 North and I-75 North (they spilt), take I-85 toward Greenville for just a short time and watch carefully for Exit 87*, GA 400 (easy to miss). Take GA 400 North all the way to North GA (over 1 hour). Shortly after the Premium Outlet Stores at Dawsonville, GA 400 ends and becomes Longbranch Road. Go straight onto Longbranch for 4.7 miles to a stop light at Route 52. Take a RIGHT onto Route 52 ( this road will become 115) toward Cleveland. Proceed approximately 13 miles to the center of Cleveland, Take LEFT onto Route 129 North in the center of Cleveland go approximately 7 miles, slow down when you approach mile marker 14. Immediately after passing mile marker 14, turn left into the camp entrance
