Date and Location

Sunday, March 18, 2012
Storm King School, 314 Mountain Road, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520

The workshop will be held on the grounds of Storm King School. Storm King School is a private boarding high school nestled on top of a mountain in the Hudson Valley. It is important to note that many faculty families live on the property, some with their pet dogs, and we are guests at their home. We have gained special permission to use this private property and certain buildings but are expected to always be respectful of the property and the residents.

All workshop participants are required to stay in and around the parking area and keep all dogs in the designated areas. Please do not walk or wander around the campus.

The lecture portion will be in a heated room, the training portions will be inside and outside depending on the weather and search exercises. The terrain is hilly and the weather can be cold, windy and snowy. Dress in layers for both inside and outside and in comfortable waterproof shoes/boots. Expect to walk back and forth to the different search areas.

You may want to bring a comfortable folding chair that you can move from place to place, something hard to write on to take notes. Full information will be in the registration confirmation.

Dogs will be crated in their vehicles. The only exception to this would be if the weather was extremely severe and necessitated crating in the building.

Simple Hides for Complex Problem Solving

This workshop will look at how to set-up practice hides to allow your dog to uncover and explore different problem solving strategies. All dogs have the ability to use their survival skills to solve problems whether it is to stay safe, warm, get nourishment, or attain something else they value. Ron Gaunt is a master at understanding these principles and applying them to developing a K9 Nose Work dog that can think independently and apply problem solving concepts to all types of situations. Learn how to use the environment to teach your dog to go to source.

Eight dogs will be our teachers for this workshop. Hides will be discussed, then the dogs will run. After the dogs run we will review the videotape with Ron. We will look at how each dog solves the problems by using their innate skills and mastering their environment. How the environmental factors made the hide "easy" or "difficult" and how to help the dog without him/her knowing or becoming dependent on the handler.

This workshop hours are from 8:30AM to 6PM. There will be a 1 - 1.25 hour lunch. Breaks may or may not be formal, depending on the dog training.

CEUs:
CNWI will get continuing education credit for attending this workshop.
