Carolyn Barney, CPDT-KA

Carolyn has been training dogs professionally since 1985. In 1991 she founded Gemini Dog Training, a full service training and daycare facility. Since selling Gemini in 2006, Carolyn is concentrating on behavior consulting and training classes for reactive dogs as well as her popular agility classes, beginner and advanced clicker classes and workshops, earth dog and tracking. Carolyn has trained and mentored 100’s of potential dog training instructors. Many of her previous students and staff trained through her instructor programs have gone on to become Certified Pet Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA), running their own classes and businesses.

Carolyn's interest in training started in childhood rearing a foal, training several young horses, and preparing them for competition and pleasure riding. It was a natural transition to start formalizing her interests through her undergraduate education that included course work in art education and a heavy interest and course load in psychology. Carolyn has been an Association of Pet Dog Training (APDT) member since 1995, having served on the Ethics Committee for several years. In November 2001, Carolyn made dog training history along with 117 other dog trainers in the USA, passing the first standardized professional certification test created by what is now known as the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers.

The desire for a better understanding of the canine mind and behavior has been the motivating factor in all aspects of her dog experience. Beginning with traditional training techniques, she knew there had to be a better way. Pursuing that better way has evolved into clicker training and a more thoughtful scientific and effective use of operant and classical conditioning. Carolyn believes that training and behavior modification should be safe, enjoyable, and successful for both the dog and the humans who love them. Most importantly, she maintains an open mind to new information and what every dog has to teach the human student. Carolyn has been training, competing, and titling dogs for over 25 years in obedience, conformation, tracking and more recently earth dog. For the past 13 years she has concentrated on agility, titling multiple dogs.

Along with her training and behavior work, Carolyn wrote Clicker Basics for Dogs and Puppies and has an agility foundation book ready for publication. Carolyn has 2 DVD’s from the Clean Run Instructor Conference, one on Agility Foundation and one on Scaredy Dogs. Carolyn co-teaches two canine cognition/behavior courses at Harvard University Extension School with Bruce Blumberg PhD, lectures to dog trainers occasionally and works as a behavior consultant for the MSPCA, providing Reactive dog training classes and behavior therapy for shelter dogs and their families. Carolyn is also an instructor for the Karen Pryor Academy and teaches out of her business, DOGS! Learning Center in Hudson, MA

Emily Levine, DVM

Dr. Emily Levine has had a life long interest in animal behavior and welfare. Since childhood, she has wanted to be a veterinarian and wanted to help both people and animals. When she was a student in veterinary school, she started to study ethology (animal behavior) and was hooked! It was at this time that she realized just how many misperceptions there were about animal behavior that resulted in the neglect of or mistreatment of animals and how behavior problems can lead to very frustrating and difficult situations for families that cause many owners to relinquish or euthanize their pets. It was at this time that she decided to pursue a residency in animal behavioral medicine.

After completing veterinary school in 2000 at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she was accepted to do an internship at a specialty medical and surgical referral practice in Arizona. She then stayed in Arizona and worked as a general practitioner for 1 year after which she moved to Ithaca, NY to begin her residency in animal behavioral at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After successfully completing her residency she accepted a position in England at The University of Lincoln’s Animal Behaviour, Cognition, and Welfare Department. Here, she ran the behavior clinic, taught students, and did research on clinical behavioral problems.

After several years of living in England, she returned to the states to work in a private practice where she could dedicate all of her time to helping pets with behavioral problems.

Dr. Levine is a published author for both lay articles and scientific articles in peer reviewed journals, and has authored several chapters in textbooks. She has done interviews for radio, television, and articles. She has appeared in an award winning documentary on animal welfare and has lectured internationally on topic on animal behavior. She is one of 46 board certified veterinary behaviorists in the United States.

She currently works in Fairfield New Jersey at the Animal Emergency & Referral Associates (www.animalerc.com).
